Well well... the butt theme continues for the second post in a row. This should not be understood to reveal any hidden agendas from my part.
Now we have come face to face with the first unfortunate or at least extremely funny implication of choosing the name Emilia. Emilia is commonly shortened in Finland as Emppu, and so also in our family (I came to this conclusion way before she was born). Emilia's cousin Peppi, about 1.5 years, has become in recent few months a very vocal person, i.e., learning to speak. This week Peppi's mom showed her a picture of Emilia and said that Emppu-serkku (cousin Emilia) is going to be coming to visit soon. Emppu is obviously slightly difficult to say. Peppi right away designated her Peppu-serkku. Which amusingly enough translates as Cousin Butt.
Same thing probably ahead when Emilia herself starts to speak. A LOT of suppressed smiles coming our way.

Spending my last mornings before vacation pondering on the presumed versatility of our mother tongue…
We have all the handy (and/or campy) expressions for the different family connections, like käly, nato, kyty and lanko for the siblings’ spouses and spouse’s siblings, plus all the miniä, vävy, anoppi and appi for the in-laws, not to mention the difference between eno and setä (uncle on mothers and fathers side). There are all the endearing names for the grandparents in different dialectal areas: mummo, mummu, tummu, mummeli; pappa, vaari, ukki, tuora, haari…
But what about niece and nephew? No specific word for them – only sisarentyttö, daughter of sister!

Ehkäpä pitää ottaa käyttöön sopiva uudissana? Tarvitaan vain luovuutta. Anyone?
