Back to school

Childbirth classes. We just signed up, and I realized I really have no clue whatsoever of what they are going to teach us. The only idea I have is the "breath in, breath out" thing from all the movies, and I do not thing that is enough content for two full days.

Reading the brochure it says (besides the fact that the check needs to be mailed and received before the signing up is confirmed...) that they help me get answers about what is happening to my body as I get closer to delivering the baby, and that they prepare me for "the amazing experience", and that they show "a wonderful birthing film". Then they also note that "even the labor coach will leave with a feeling of reassurance and a wealth of knowledge on coaching the mother on labor!".

Hmm. Seems that the brochure is, again, 100% written to the mother-to-be. And also I note that apparently I am elevated to the esteemed position of "labor coach". I guess they can't say "oh yes, and that useless piece of man that got you into this condition can come too if he must". But what the heck? Coach? Based on what qualifications? Back when I did sports (yes, limited to martial arts, but quite some of that), a requirement for coaching was at least some experience in the thing you are coaching about. The more the better. Can't really say in any honesty that about giving birth. But then again, coaching is just a down-to-earth version of teaching. And there is the old tried and true saying: Those that can, they do anything. Those that can't, they teach. As told to me by one of my best teachers. (And yes, later I did understood that to be a hint that I should not become a teacher)

Anyway. I'll be a coach then. Let's see if I learn more than the breathing thing. I can bet a lot that if that is all there is, I'll end up being hit with quite a few hard objects thrown at me in the delivery room.

Thanks to everyone who has sent comments over email. It is in fact true that the comment functionality does work on this blog, so those kind of public comments are welcome as well. (Thanks Laura again, for the first comment.) An intense debate on toy dragons would be welcome for one helpful thing. In the spirit of the gateway drug theory (yes, you got it, check wikipedia...), I am aware of the potential harmful effects they might have on the kids in introducing them to fantasy literature and role playing games. Am I destroying the future of my daughter with this move?

Ok, I was waiting for somebody else to take the comment on gateways and theories but I quess it'll have to be me: Plushies or not, honestly what are the odds that this little one will not develop interest in stuff like RPGs, fantasy lit, computers, not to mention weird scary stuff like equations? ;) Then again, she just might surpass the odds and dress up as a princess and have dolls as her favorite toys. We'll see. Her choice.
